CSX Train Derails at Race Street Crossing

March 9, 2010, a CSX train from Albany, NY headed toward Virginia derailed after rolling over the switch near Race Street. Five cars jumped the tracks. The Race Street Crossing was passable even though one of the derailed cars was on top of the crossing. CSX closed the tracks to rail traffic for a day or two. The crossings will remain open.

This event benefits the Schuylkill River Park Alliance in its effort to Complete The Trail making the Schuylkill River Trail the region's first Green Transportation & Recreation Corridor. Our other main activity is to monitor the installation of safe street level access to the Schuylkill River Park Trail and the construction of the Schuylkill River Parks Connector Bridge to promote a safe environment for all park users.

To Create the Region's First Green Transportation Corridor

Do you wish the trail would meet up the new South Street Bridge, Bartram's Garden and beyond? Would you go further north than the East Falls Bridge if there was a safe way to Manayunk?  Wouldn't it be terrific to cross the Schuylkill River on one of three existing bridges that connect Manayunk to Lower Merion Township?

If the answer is YES, then you must sign the petition calling for elected officials to help find funding for nine trail projects that will Complete the Trail. Our goal is to get 3000 signatures!

Thank you to Councilman Curtis Jones Jr. for introducing City Council Resolution 090134 calling for Completing the Trail.

Extending the Trail from Locust to South Street

Schuylkill River Development Corporation has unveiled the conceptual design of the boardwalk it plans to build between Locust Street and the South Street Bridge.  The slide show presented on November 17th is available here (3.2 MB pdf)

The boardwalk will be 50 feet out in the river to avoid the tree canopies that are along the embankment.  It will connect to the South Street Bridge ramp (north side of bridge) and also connect to the river bank just south of a set of stairs being built from the Bridge on the south side of bridge.

The boardwalk will be a concrete surface, 15 feet wide and 4-9 feet high from the water (depending on the tide).

SRDC has $4 million of the $10 million construction cost identified and needs $6 million to complete the entire project.

Any comments on this design can be sent to erin.bolz@srdc.net
